Part 1: Optimax vs Vista (Malaysia). Which one to choose?

I just had my eyes done in Optimax in July 2007 and I would like to share my experience. I choose CUSTOM INTRALASIK (newest technology at the moment). The price is stated in the website (www.optimax.com.my). The outcome is fantastic~! Immediately after the surgery I can see better than 6/6.

I did my homework between VISTA and OPTIMAX. I find that Optimax is better because for the same surgery, their price is cheaper by few thousand and their toll free number receptionist is patience and professional. I had zero knowledge in the laser eye then and i ask numerous question. Especially why Optimax and Vista's price are so different and which treatment is equal to the other since both use different term. They answer all with patience and they help me a lot.

On the other hand Vista receptionist is quiet rude. When i ask about the package she sounded quite impatient as if she is sleepy after lunch. Then when i ask what is the difference between ur package and the competitor she straight away say that "many patients cant make up their mind so u have to visit the centre to check." I feel turn off by her reply and decide to go to Optimax.

In term of pricing Optimax is cheaper. Eg Optimax custom intralasik is around 6.6k both eyes while Vista SuperLasik Intra+VISX is around Rm10k (i compared both bcos they uses wavefront tech). Further Vista's price discrimination is rather confusing. An essentially 3 treatment are divided into 6 types of pricing. The 3 main treatment is the "blade+std (VISTA)" = lasik (OPTIMAX), "Intra+std, Intra+std plus, Intra+adv" = IntraLasik (more or less) and the last one is "SuperLasik Intra+Visx" = Custom IntraLasik. Optimax pricing are more straight forward.

In term of experience Optimax is definitely more and it is the first centre to open in Malaysia.

In term of machine it seems Vista one is better. However both use same technology (wavefront) and same method. So i do not feel that is good justification for its more expensive package.

In terms of outlook of the centre, Vista one look better. It looks more cozy while Optimax one just look like its there a long time. This again i do not feel is an important assessment but I think if Optimax can upgrade then they will have more customer. Sometimes ppl do look at first impression.

In term of website, Vista's one look more professional and informative. At first impression i feel more comfortable with Vista because the website is my "first connection" but too bad the receptionist is rude and i do not know why their price are way higher.

The above is the reason i choose Optimax. Once i made up my mind I went to look at the centre in jb and book an appointment for check up. Hope this help would be go-er to decide where to do their eyes. However my assessment has limitation because i did not go for consultation in Vista. I went once and their centre are close on monday~!! Haha speak about fate~

Dear Yvonne

Sadly, a lot of people receive information and do not realise it is incorrect and are happy to tell everyone about it.

I am a happy recipient of LASIK treatment @ VISTA in 2007. My sister did it @ Optimax 2001. We talk about it before LASIK and i did quite intensive study on it to the point i researched it as well as it can be learnt.

Every Laser machine has its pros and cons. Every company too! But a lot of people just compare it by pricing and what little information they receive from "sources" without verifying.

Example: Consider a computer, all of them have a keyboard, screen, mouse and CPU, video card etc. However, would you say they are the same? They are vastly different in pricing, specs and speed etc. But, if say you do not have information about it, how would you tell which is better? When proton salesman tell you that the exora is the same with the Mercedes B class, just MPV and then you take it for that? Just cos the class is same???

I ask optimax staff in Mid Valley Maybank Fair and also in their JB office this question and their answer was what they told you - Its the same! Just different brand. Its all custom wavefront guided! Good enough for you it seems but not me.

I went to research all the different laser machines online, with overseas doctors and etc and i found out that there are MAJOR differences. To tell you all would take pages but basically, there are differences in Safety, range of treatment (to do safely), ability to do how high levels of imperfections, speed, accuracy AND MOST IMPORTANTLY - RESULTS!

If you check with Optimax JB, they were using the Nidek EC500CXII laser compared with VISTA JB's Bausch & Lomb Zyoptix 100z (like i said i checked). Based on the 2 company's website, and checking further on the number of doctors using each technolgy, you will see the consensus is the the B&L is a superior machine. The results on their website also show that the Nidek is NOT FDA approved for custom treatment and the results are poor. But i take it with a pinch of salt and did research on other sites and doctors in the region. The B&L and the VISX has been the most popular machines in major countries that do LASIK like Korea, Japan, Singapore etc. All the bigger and more experienced centers overseas go for the visx and B&L, i wonder why?? Go find out how many doctor in Singapore uses the Nidek. You'll laugh! Are all the people doing the lasers in these centers stupid to pay so much more money for the same thing? LOL!

It's like the MPV - A honda stream is more gas efficient, more quality and safety features, better service etc. Yes, the Exora may have a GPS and built in TV but is that more important than failing to brake safely when you hit a puddle? What's more, when you buy a car, you don't like it, just change the car. But with LASIK, after its done, if you don't like it or it fails you, can you do it again?

So dear all, please read and investigate more. Your eyes are worth more than a optimax consultant telling you that its the same and you accepting it. DO YOUR RESEARCH.

Just consider this. If your company sells a certain item more expensive than other companies but its exactly same but different brand, would you buy it? Taking into consideration that this is not an accessory like branded handbag etc. Safety and results are the most important.

The reason i chose VISTA is due to this consultant telling me the EXACT thing - its all the same. I did my research. I have asked tons of people and even read your blog then but i choose to go and find out myself. And i have not regretted it.

After 4 years and then reading the internet again about this - cos my brother did his lasik recently again @ VISTA JB, i have no regrets. Neither has he.

Obviously this Anonymous is a marketing staff from vista. Stop telling how deep research you have done.. If you done ur research probably you will found out that whose doctors are more experienced and famous. Optimax refractive surgery results are better at all time. Vista is simply better in the way of marketing, roadshow, pricing. that's it.

Becos I worked at both places before. and the fact is, vista only work on refractive surgery and cataract surgery (easy going surgery), Optimax includes keratoconus fitting, Bandage contact lens fitting, Autokeratology, retinal surgery, glacoma surgery, macular diseases, ofcos include as well refractive surgery and cataract surgery. They are now going to open Malaysia first eye hospital soon, at Titiwangsa if I not mistaken.

Conclusion: Vista has a good marketing team behind the doctors.

Optimax marketing teams are not as good, but they do have alot good doctors and optometrists.

Currently probably the 2 best machines around are the Alcon EX500 and the Amaris 750S/1050RS. But good machines also need good and experienced doctors to use the features properly for great results-and the difference will have to do especially with night time vision in the dark.

The excitement of seing without glass is the main reason why we do lasik. But when excitement hits you, u might become so bias in decision making. Dont stop reading and u will will find out why other people are making so much effort to tell people not to do lasik. Who will benefit from their voice, not them for sure.

Vista, is a bunch of good marketeer. They use their no of years and experience to persuade people. They just want to sell you the 6k package. Anything lower they tell you that your astig is to high and cannot choose the lower one. All sorts of bs. I am no Dr, but I don't think they are sincere too. They put fear to you that by getting the lower package, you are getting the lower quality lense and they assign another dr to you after that. Makes me think that if taking the higher package then they will only assign the experience dr to you. They tell you if cheaper package then your night vision will be darker. Look at their brochure, they purposely make it darker to scared you.
